American Diabetes Association: Diabetes World - Advocacy Edition

November 13 , 2007

November is a very exciting month for ADA. November has been designated American Diabetes Month, and for the first time, World Diabetes Day is being recognized and will be celebrated on November 14th. While we want our advocates to get involved year-round, we hope that everyone will make an extra effort this month to raise awareness about diabetes and encourage friends and family members to join us in the fight against diabetes. As always, we appreciate your feedback.

Legislative Updates

Fighting for Increased Diabetes Funding

Last week Congress approved the first increase in two years for diabetes research, prevention and treatment. This increase was included in the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations bill which includes a variety of other health, education and labor programs. President Bush has stated he plans to veto the measure. If that happens, the bill will return to the U.S. House of Representatives for a veto override vote. This promises to be a very close vote and we will need all Diabetes Advocates to help contact their representatives to override the veto once it has occurred.

Senate Hearing on Americans With Disabilities Act

This week, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee will hold a hearing to learn about employment discrimination and how the ADA Restoration Act can restore the original intent and protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Diabetes Advocate, Stephen Orr, will be testifying at the hearing.

Advocacy Spotlights

Fighting for Fairness – Brian East

Brian East

On November 2–3, the ADA held Fighting for Fairness, an attorney training attended by nearly 95 lawyers from 22 states and the District of Columbia. Meet Brian East, senior attorney in the Legal Services Unit of Advocacy, Inc., a Texas advocacy organization for persons with disabilities. Brian is a member of ADA’s Legal Advocacy subcommittee and was the Program Chair for Fighting for Fairness.

Why are you involved in ADA’s advocacy efforts?
I joined the ADA’s Legal Advocacy Subcommittee for a number of reasons—because diabetes discrimination affects so many people; because the fight against it requires us to strengthen the Americans with Disabilities Act, a principal focus of my day-to-day work; because the Association’s investment in legal advocacy work is almost unique, is state-of-the-art, and is one of the best ways I know of to effectively combat discrimination. Fighting for Fairness is likewise unique, creating a network of well-trained lawyers around the country willing to take on discrimination when it occurs.

Protecting Kids

ADA is working with the Indiana Department of Education on the implementation of the Care of Students with Diabetes Act which passed earlier this year. The legislation allows school personnel to be trained in diabetes care appropriate for the student and allow students with diabetes to self manage their disease on school property. ADA is working to ensure that the mandated training takes place throughout the state as well as recommending training resources and materials that have aided in the implementation of similar legislation in other states.
